Destruït el 79 dC per la lava volcànica, Herculà segueix sent una de les pistes més fascinants sobre la vida dels rics a l'època romana.

Amb més marbre i mosaics esplèndids a les seves restes que Pompeia, és evident que les cases d'Herculà no van quedar completament destruïdes per l'erupció, sinó que només van quedar enterrades en cendres fins als pisos superiors.
