Herculaneum werd in 79 n.C. verwoest door vulkanische lava en blijft een van de meest fascinerende overblijfselen van de rijkdom uit de Romeinse Oudheid.

In tegenstelling tot Pompeii zijn de huizen van Herculaneum niet compleet verwoest door uitbarsting. Het marmer en de mozaïeken waren alleen bedolven onder as.
