En 1921 se inauguró el teatro Walter Kerr con su nombre original, The Ritz. Propiedad de los Shubert y diseñado por Herbert J. Krapp, estaba destinado a ser un teatro hermano del Teatro Ambassador.
A partir de 1939, la CBS y la ABC utilizaron el espacio para grabar programas de radio y televisión. En la década de 1970 se convirtió de nuevo en una sala de cine, pero en 1983 recuperó su legitimidad. Sus actuales propietarios, Jujamcyn Theatres, gastaron millones en restaurar el teatro en 1990 y desde entonces ha albergado exitosas representaciones en Broadway.
