Get ready to turn back time and see Venice's most fascinating history inside two locations that have shaped the city, perhaps, even more than its canals. After you've visited the landmark locations, start discovering more of the city your smartphone audio guide.
The exterior hints at its beauty, and inside – with a golden staircase, triumphal arches, and frescoed walls – you'll get a complete sense of its splendor.
The first Doge's Palace was built on this spot in the 9th century, but was destroyed in a fire. The present Gothic palace dates back to the 14th century (with many renovations and refurbishments done along the way). However, it stands tall as a beautiful reminder of the power of the Venetian Republic.
To enter the Doge's Palace is to travel back in time and uncover the history and culture of the City of Masks. Inside, you'll find fantastically ornate rooms, decorated by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto.
Another highlight is walking the notorious Bridge of Sighs – so named for the laments of the convicted criminals as they made their way to the New Prisons.
Enjoy access to the main areas of St. Mark's, including: skip-the-line entry to the basilica, St. Mark's Museum, and the terrace that overlooks St. Mark's Square.
Housing the relics of Saint Mark, the Basilica of St. Mark’s Basilica has become a symbol of Venice that’s known around the world.
The Basilica as it’s known today took shape in 1063 AD, thanks to the Doge Domenico Contarini and his successors. The relics of St. Mark, ornate mosaics, and majestic design elements have helped cement the sacred building as the main architectural marvel of Venice.
St Mark's Museum displays works of Flemish and Medicean tapestry, altar frontals, Persian carpets, and other furnishings. For centuries these were the protagonists that created a sumptuous and refined scenography for functions presided over by the Doge. They've been saved from the storage room so you can admire them.
Before you leave the basilica complex, head up to the terrace of the Loggia dei Cavalli to take in the view overlooking St. Mark's Square.
