During the course of the 20th century, Japan's sense of 'self' underwent a rapid period of cultural revolution. Artists and creatives rushed to synthesize the old Japan with the Japan that would be, through art. This is where MOMAT comes in.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) focuses on Japan's cultural production from the start of the 20th century. This state-of-the-art museum is comprised of more than 13,000 works including Japanese and Western-style paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, and videos.

MOMAT prides itself on being the only museum in Japan to seamlessly present a chronological passage of Japan's 20th-century culture in a single sweep. Explore themed areas, such as 'A Room with a View', which offers up Tokyo itself as the ultimate artwork through its huge windows.

Apart from curating Japan's progression into the future, MOMAT also hosts special exhibitions by renowned artists. Their MOMAT Collection is located on the second to fourth floors of the museum. This exhibit showcases 200 pieces from the permanent collection which is dedicated to unraveling the innumerable layers of modern-day society.
