Visit Vatnshellir, one of Iceland’s ancient lava tubes formed 8,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption in the Purkhólar area. The cave is located just 500 meters from the volcanic crater. When molten lava flowed downhill, it cooled on the surface, creating a crust. After the eruption stopped, the inner lava drained out, leaving the tube structure. You can still see lava minerals inside Vatnshellir.
The cave is 200 meters (656 feet) long and reaches a depth of 35 meters (114 feet). Guides will walk you through the cave, sharing information about Iceland's geology and folklore, including tales of trolls inhabiting caves. Experience complete darkness by turning off your lights at the deepest point of the cave.
