About: Tahrir Square

Tahrir Square is the central heart of Cairo with a rich history. Originally called Ismailia Square, it was renamed "Tahrir," meaning "liberation," after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. The square was also a key site in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.

Surrounded by major landmarks, Tahrir Square includes the Egyptian Museum, which displays Tutankhamun’s treasures, and the Arab League headquarters. The Mogamma building also adds to the area’s significance. Today, Tahrir Square is a lively public space for both locals and visitors.
