Surrounded by England's green and pleasant landscape, Carisbrooke Castle is a must-visit landmark on the Isle of Wight.
Perched on a steep motte at the heart of the island, the medieval castle has an eventful past. Through the centuries it's been a besieged fortress, an idyllic royal summer residence, and even a prison for the overthrown Charles I.
There are stellar views to be had from the castle walls, and visitors can also meet the famous Carisbrooke donkeys. Another highlight is Charles' bowling green, where the imprisoned Stuart king would cut loose prior to his beheading in 1649.
Combine Carisbrooke Castle with other Newport favorites. Some things are better together.
