What's on at Museum Europäischer Kulturen

The permanent exhibition 'Cultural Contacts. Living in Europe' examines discussions on social movements and social boundaries. Take a look at the mobility, physical and social, of people within Europe and explore the development of global cultures. The exhibition raises questions of belonging and the identity of individuals and whole groups.

As a result of globalization, do individuals feel 'lost' and yearn for what is familiar to them: their home, their home town, a particular region or their country? Let us know if you relate.

What's on at Museum Europäischer Kulturen

Get all festive with a giant nativity scene set in a hillside town that was fabricated in the 19th century in the Ore Mountains, near the border of Germany and the Czech Republic. Here you'll see 300 figures re-enact the most important stages in the life of Christ, from the Annunciation to his birth in the manger, the story of the Passion, his suffering and death, and finally his resurrection.

Almost half of the figures can move, and the last time someone fully assembled the scene was in 1940, after which it was packed away in the attic for decades. Kids and adults alike will be wowed by the hundreds of wheels and cogs, shafts and leavers, wires and threads!
