Roam the archaeological site of Naxos, the first Grecian civilization in Sicily. Built on the volcanic peninsula of Schisò, you'll be able to walk amid the ancient ruins of a once-great city.
As you walk through the Naxos Archaeological Site, it may be hard to imagine that this was once a major maritime settlement; families and individuals all shaped their lives on the ground you stand upon and the nearby port would have held a fleet of triremes. However, in 403 BC, large swathes of the city were destroyed by Dionysius of Syracuse, and the city never truly recovered.
Alongside the walls of Naxos, visit the Archaeological Museum of Naxos and see a range of archaeological discoveries. Look out for painted terracotta which would have decorated the roofs of sacred buildings, as well as a reconstruction of a large pedimental slab ornamented with a Gorgon.
