Learn the history of Canada’s Mounted Police inside the Fort Museum, a recreation of the 1874 fort built by the North West Mounted Police (NWMP).
You can step back in time inside the museum’s eight buildings which house over 9,000 artifacts and an archival collection. You’ll also have the chance to visit two of the oldest buildings in the area – the Fred Kanouse trading cabin and Sir Frederick Haultain’s law office – both of which have been fully restored on their original sites.
The star of any visit is the NWMP Musical Ride, a tradition dating back to 1876. Originally, training for the Musical Ride offered up some relief from the usual humdrum of daily drills and routine duties that officers went through, but by 1904 it had become public entertainment, and more than a century later this skilled display of horsemanship is still just as impressive.
