Some say that Akrotiri is the real Lost City of Atlantis. True or not, this prehistoric wonder is still one of the most spectacular and significant archaeological sites in the Aegean.

Located on the beautiful island of Santorini (Thíra), Akrotiri was a prosperous Minoan port town, having ties to mainland Greece and places as distant as Egypt and Syria.

Much like the ruins of Pompeii, this ancient town owes its destruction, and, ironically, its amazing preservation to an island-wide volcanic eruption that blanketed everything in superheated ash.

Today, a bioclimatic roof covers the site, and walkways are suspended over the archaeological ruins, allowing visitors to move between the two and three-story structures.

Still, though, it's probably best not to anger Poseidon when you visit... just in case!
