Located on 24 hectares (60 acres) of parks and lakes in the UK, Colchester Zoo is home to more than 200 unique species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and more.
From the savannahs of Africa to the rainforests of Australia, you'll come in contact with hundreds of critters throughout the facility.
There are many ways to make sure you spend a full day at the Colchester Zoo.
By car
- Take the A1124 exit (Junction 26) off the main A12. Follow the brown elephant signs until you get to the new Stanway Western Bypass. Car parking is free and disabled parking spaces are available near the entrance
By public transport
- From London, take transport from Liverpool Street to Colchester Main Train Station. Or, take the Lowestoft or Norwich networks to Ipswich and then on to Colchester
- From the Colchester Main Train Station, take the bus (line 75 for Maldon or Tiptree) to the Colchester Zoo
You can bring outside food and drinks into the Colchester Zoo. However, there are plenty of places to dine inside the facility.
Near almost every exhibit, you can find something to appease your roaring appetite – ice cream, snacks, sausages, and even fish and chips are available to purchase.
Colchester Zoo also offers a pre-packaged picnic program – simply pre-order before the day of your visit, pick it up, and enjoy at any number of picnic areas located throughout the park.

General information
- You can park in the zoo's parking area for free
- Bicycles, scooters, children's cars, skateboards, and rollerblades are not allowed inside the zoo
- There's a bike rack in the parking area for locking your bicycle
- Children under 16 must be accompanied by a full-paying adult
- The zoo offers free WiFi access throughout the park – ask staff for the current password
Accessibility information
- You may book a wheelchair or scooter for use. Please complete this form and book 24 hours in advance
- Most of the zoo is wheelchair accessible but please be advised the terrain is hilly
- You may use your own electric scooter, but due to steep hills you assume full responsibility for correct use
- Except for guide and assistance dogs, no other dogs are allowed anywhere on the zoo site
- Leaving dogs in cars is not permitted, and those found doing so will be refused entry
