Engulfed by thick jungle in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Chichén Itzá is the mystical focal point of one of Earth's most fascinating civilizations.

Ride a comfy bus from your base in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, and explore an ancient Maya city with an English-speaking guide. Your day trip also includes another local wonder – one of its beautiful cenotes. Bring your swimwear and bask in a freshwater pool that's millions of years old!

Set out early and travel into the Yucatán jungle (you can opt for breakfast on the bus if you need a little extra shut-eye).

Your guide will share a brief history of Chichén Itzá, once a powerful Maya regional capital. Learn how it rose to prominence around 600AD. Be introduced to Maya culture, both past and present, and find out how dastardly Spaniards toppled the city after decades of bloody resistance. Climb the highest pyramid in the region, the Temple of Kukulcan – the most important remaining structure of the city.

You'll need a breather to process all your new-found knowledge. Luckily, there's an idyllic spot just a few kilometers away. The Santuario Tsukán cenote – deep, open, and surrounded by nature – is one of the region's most famous natural pools. Cenotes were often sacred landmarks used for important Maya ceremonies, human sacrifices, and, who knows, maybe even ancient synchronized swimming competitions.

Enjoy a refreshing drink (choose between a soda or a beer) back on the bus and relax on the ride to La Casona restaurant. Indulge in a delicious buffet meal with local delicacies, drinks, and desserts.

End your tour with some free time in the wonderful Pueblo Mágico of Valladolid and a convenient transfer back to your hotel.
