Castel Sant'Angelo

4.3 / 5 (14,086 reviews)

The towering cylinder of Castel Sant'Angelo, and its statue of Archangel Michael, is an instantly recognizable silhouette on the banks of the Tiber.

Initially built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, its purpose has changed many times over the years, from a fortress, a residence, a prison, and now a museum.

Pleased to book in advance as saves so much time. Castle Sant'Angelo is nothing more than a glorified viewing point though. Got around so quick. Don't like phone audio guides so I didn't use it.

We really enjoyed the castle! It was easy to get in and buy an audio guide (optional), and it wasn’t super busy and we had plenty of time to walk through at our own pace!
