Right in the heart of Budapest, in the former Jewish Ghetto area stands the Grand Synagogue of the Orthodox Jewry, located in Kazinczy Street. Since opening its opulent doors in 1913, Europe’s most outstanding Orthodox Jewish house of worship has also been one of the most significant Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) monuments in Hungary.
Take your time wandering around this protected national monument, and note its mosaic walls and stained glass windows, which let in natural light and make it the most beautifully illuminated synagogue in Europe.
Hungary? Treat yourself to a cultural feast by combining your visit with some typical Hungarian Jewish cuisine in the glatt kosher restaurant, Hanna Garden, next to the synagogue. Ever tried Cholent (Sólet) or Flódni? They might just be your new favourite things.
