Set out from Salta and journey north on a bus to the Tren a las Nubes, with three scenic stops before you reach the train at San Antonio de los Cobres. You'll also have the chance to enjoy an Andean country breakfast and crafts fair. Once your stomach's full, get ready for the high-altitude Train to the Clouds.
As you leave the city behind and head for the horizon, the view from your window will change rapidly from Salta's colonial architecture to red plains and mountaintops that would feel at home in a Spaghetti Western.
You won't be travelling for too long before you make your first stop at the town of Campo Quijano, where you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the C-14 line that you'll visit later in the day.
Your next stop is another hint of what to expect on your train journey. Hop off the bus and check out the Viaducto del Toro, a bridge nestled between mountains where a small river flows and mist sometimes settles. It makes for a dramatic photo.
Before you experience one of the most remarkable journeys of your life, there's one more stop. Explore the town of El Alfarcito and mingle with the locals at a craft fair, enjoy a country breakfast, explore the Andean architecture and maybe even spot a llama.
Now for the main event – the train from San Antonio de los Cobres to the La Polvorilla viaduct. This magnificent passage will take you on a bridge 63 meters above the ground and 4,200 meters above sea level. Looking down might leave you nervous, but the memory of crossing the Viaduct of Polvorilla will last a lifetime.
