Tips for visiting the Museum of Photography / Helmut Newton Foundation

Most people plan to spend at least a couple of hours visiting The Museum of Photography and Helmut Newton Foundation. There's quite a lot to see and the museum has been a magnet for photography enthusiasts since its opening back in 2004.

The Helmut Newton Foundation spans the two lower floors of the building. Dive into its permanent exhibition Helmut Newton’s Private Property, and see exhibitions on Helmut Newton’s work, his wife Alice Springs, and his contemporaries. That should take at least an hour.

On the museum’s second floor, you'll need at least another hour to explore the Art Library’s Collection of Photography, which showcases a series of rotating photography exhibitions. These incorporate other media and art forms, such as sculpture and film.

The best time to visit the Helmut Newton Foundation is before the crowds start forming!

Go early enough and you could be among the first to see current exhibitions like Alice Springs: The MEP Show, a portrait collection by the widow of Helmut Newton, and Private Property, Helmut's personal belongings and work.

Another good time to visit is on Thursday night, when the Helmut Newton Foundation stays open until 8 pm. You will likely encounter fewer people here during this time, and fewer families with children. Weekends are usually the busiest.

There is no restaurant or bar inside the Helmut Newton Foundation.

However, there are lots of places to eat and drink in the vicinity, including family-friendly staples like McDonald's and Pizza Hut, and many places to try local specialties, including curry bratwurst.

Looking for a drink? Newton is the place for a beer or cocktail nearby. This intriguing bar is named after the photographer himself, and is just a short walk from the Helmut Newton Foundation. Maybe don't take the kids, and not just because of the booze factor. Newton's famous nudes line the walls!

The Helmut Newton Foundation is inside the Museum of Photography, located on Jebensstraße in Berlin. It's easy to reach by foot, as well as public transport. Depart at Station Zoologischer Garten and take the exit Jebensstrasse. It's just a short walk from there.

The best kind of Helmut Newton Foundation tickets let you skip the lines to the entrance and get right in. Book them online before you go and bypass the queues to walk over 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, showcasing photography from the 19th to the 21st century. It's a shutterbug's dream.

What's on: Museum für Fotografie

The Helmut Newton Foundation occupies the two lower floors in the building and has for many years presented its hugely successful permanent exhibition 'Helmut Newton's Private Property', as well as individual exhibitions on Helmut Newton's work, his wife Alice Springs, and his contemporaries, including: 'Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes', 'Newton, Nachtwey, Lachapelle: Men, War & Peace', 'Pigozzi and the Paparazzi', and 'Helmut Newton Polaroids'.

The exhibition 'Private Property', on the ground floor of the museum, includes Newton's cameras, his own photo and art collection, the famous Newton-Mobile, his library and parts of his office at Monte Carlo. It also includes posters of his exhibitions and numerous publications of Helmut Newton's photographs.
