Both a natural frontier and a transit route, the Rhône has always favored human settlement on its banks. Both a natural frontier and a transit route, the Rhône has always favored human settlement on its banks. With a length of 812 km, it links the Swiss glaciers to the Mediterranean Sea, crossing a varied landscape. Described as the "King's River", impetuous and untamable, the Rhône is the stuff of myth.
The exhibition unfolds along the monument's tour route: you'll discover how people lived with the river in different eras, and what uses they made of it, here at the foot of Fort Saint-André. Imagine how its course has evolved, both naturally and under the influence of man, who has always tried to control it. Finally, we invite you on a voyage of discovery of the river's present-day landscapes, thanks to the photographs of Camille Moirenc, who has been following the river's course for many years, bearing witness to its diversity.

Combine Fort Saint-André with other Villeneuve-lès-Avignon favorites. Some things are better together.
Offering stunning 360° views over Avignon and Provence since the 14th century, Fort Saint-André is a magnificent medieval fortress set amidst a breathtaking panorama of sunny southern France. From the castle walls, you can see the historic Palais des Papes, as well as Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, the Luberon, and lots of glorious countryside. It was commissioned by the French King Philippe le Bel as a bit of a power move and for its strategic vantage point. The castle is an exceptional testimony to the military architecture of the 14th century.
