Combine Catacombs of San Sebastiano with other Rome favorites. Some things are better together.
The place where the Catacomb of St. Sebastian stands was once a deep depression, used as a quarry for pozzolan and called Ad Catacumbas (i.e. "near the cavities"), a denomination that has become synonymous with the underground cemetery. Since the first century the site has been intensely exploited and built upon. The underground tunnels were reused to obtain burial niches, while several columbaria were built on the surface. Emperor Constantine (306-337) built a Basilica in the shape of a Roman circus.
