Castello Sforzesco FAQs

Castello Sforzesco is absolutely worth visiting. Not only does this structure feature quintessential Italian architecture and beautiful gardens, but the castle also houses several pieces of invaluable artwork from across Italy, including Michelangelo’s last masterpiece, Pietà Rondanini – among other Renaissance greats like Da Vinci, Mantegna, and Bramantino.

The impressive ornamental gardens of Ducal Park are world-renowned and extend beyond the Castello Sforzesco complex, inviting visitors for a day of exploring. A 19th-century English garden remains from the Napoleonic era, as well as a gigantic arena built to hold 30,000 spectators – a venue to host occasional naval battles by flooding the stadium with water.

Although basic admission to the castle grounds of Castello Sforzesco is free of charge, you will barely scratch the surface of this iconic Italian monument. Whether you have an hour to spare, or can budget an entire day, there are plenty of opportunities to dig a little deeper to discover the roots of this historic city. With a minimal price tag ranging from €5-10 (depending on your age), choose from a variety of museums and tour experiences to make your Milan adventure worthwhile.

Originally built as a medieval fortress in the 14th century, Castello Sforzesco has exchanged hands between many national and foreign rulers over the centuries, causing a “love-hate” relationship with the people of Milan. However, it is because of this rich historical fabric that it was selected to represent the beauty and history of Milan, as well as guard some of Italy's most precious artworks, sculptures, and monuments.

Today, this famous Italian site has undergone several renovations to bring the Castello Sforzesco back to its original glory, and now includes dozens of museum venues with numerous pieces of art from the Italian Renaissance, a refurbished aquarium, as well as several historical and contemporary monuments in the adjoining gardens, all enclosed among its several piazzas and towers.

Because of the extensive outdoor gardens and buildings, as well as the multitude of museums within the complex, you should budget 2-3 hours or even up to half a day to see the Castello Sforzesco to its fullest potential.

While you can always risk showing up to the Castello Sforzesco for a same-day ticket, it is advisable to book in advance, especially during high season. If you want to see the museums, or if you would prefer a guided tour, making a reservation is always the best option.
