NEMO Science Museum is a science centre in Amsterdam, located at the Oosterdok. It was built on top of the IJ-tunnel that connects the centre of Amsterdam with the north of the city. The striking building, designed by Italian architect and engineer, Renzo Piano, opened its doors in 1997. Some say the shape of the building mimics the appearance of a large boat, but others suggest that it's actually a reflection of the tunnel it was built upon.
The German anatomist Gunther von Hagens, who invented the plastination technique in the late 1970s at teh University of Heidelberg, developed this exhibition. The Body Worlds Exhibition was first presented in 1995. Showing whole bodies plastinated in lifelike poses and dissected to show various structures and systems of human anatomy, which has since met with public interest and controversy in more than 50 museums and venues around the world.
Micropia is a museum dedicated to the microscopic life of microbes. It is located beside Amsterdam's ARTIS Zoo. It is located east of the Amstel and is easily accessible by tram, or ten minutes' walk from Waterlooplein metro station.
The museum of big questions. From communicating plants to a competition with a chimpanzee, or a smell tunnel where recognition and emotion alternate. Expect a personal expedition as you criss-cross through the museum. Built between 1850 and 1855 for the members of the Society Natura Artis Magistra, it stands on the oldest grounds of ARTIS and at the time was one of the most modern buildings in Amsterdam. The museum, which closed in 1947, has since been completely renovated and restored.
