According to Top of the Rock, there are two times best for beating the crowd. The least busy time is right after they open at 9 am or later at night, from 8 pm onward.

The decision to visit in the morning or evening depends on whether you want to see the sunrise or sunset. If you’re an early riser, why not see the city wake up and enjoy a sunrise? If you’re a night owl, no problem, you can watch the gorgeous city transform at sunset instead. 

Visiting with Kids

If you’re going to be visiting with your kids, the morning often provides a great time to start since the kids will be energetic and ready to explore. They’ll love the Sky Shuttle elevator that quickly goes up 200 meters in less than a minute, plus the 45-60 minute (on average) visit time will be just long enough to keep them from getting antsy!

You’ll get great views without getting rained on from the mostly-enclosed 67th-floor deck. The views from the fully open decks on the 69th and 70th floors are great for days with fog or light drizzle (or of course when there’s sunshine!).

Sure, summer days are long and warm (and humid!) but if you’re brave enough to face the crowds, you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the city. There may be longer wait times and larger crowds in summer, so think about booking online ahead of time. 

New York City buzzes with extra energy in the summer, and the longer days mean more time for sightseeing. Although there might be more people out and about, the longer daylight hours give you plenty of chances to see stunning views in both daylight and at sunset.

If you visit around Christmas, be sure to check out the iconic decorations around Rockefeller Center before you go to the top of the building. You’ll also see the big Christmas tree and ice skating rink.
